Buns & Updos Natural Hair Styles
Buns and updos are simple natural hair styles especially when you don’t have time to do more long term protective styles. Buns and updos can be professional and elegant natural hair styles. Buns in particular are also a great way to keep your ends tucked away from the damaging elements.
General tips for bun and updo hair styles:
- Do not brush your hair too hard to avoid damaging your edges
- Use ouchless band or clips to prevent snagging the hair
- Moisturize your ends well and apply oil to keep them moist before bunning or pinning up
I know buns and updos can seem like a boring natural hair style but you can make them fun and attractive using accessories. I use flowers, headbands, clips, and pins to accessorize my buns and updos.
Important- I personally do not recommend wet bunning for MOST naturals with type 4 hair. I find that when I have tried this my hair was a tangled mess. Some people have used wet buns to help grow their hair but I find it very hard to get the tangles out and I end up with lots of breakage.
In terms of protective styling I personally prefer to wear other types of updos. An updo is basically a style that puts the hair up so that it is not rubbing against the shoulders, neck etc…
On Wednesday nights my guilty pleasure is Empire. Great acting, engaging story lines, and good music, but… another thing that keeps me coming back is Serayah. Serayah McNeil is the lovely singer and actress who plays Tiana on Empire. Not only is she talented, but her hair is just gorgeous and I think she is […]
Several people have asked how I wear my natural hair in between my 2 week washings. This is a simple natural hair style that I wear quiet frequently to work and around the house. It is quick and it is also a protective style. This style can easily be adapted for shorter hair. 1) […]
The straight bun is any easy style for natural hair, it can help keep your natural hair straighter for a longer time. Start with hair that has been blown out or flat ironed. To minimize heat use stretch your hair using rollers and sit under a hooded dryer instead of straightening. Watch my video here […]
This is a super easy and quick style I do pretty regularly on my twisted natural hair. I can do this hair style in under an hour and it lasts me a week. Then I take the twists loose and wear a twist out. 1) Put your hair in loose jumbo twists. I do […]
This natural hair twist style can be done on medium length or long hair. It generally takes me about 1.5-2 hours from start to finish but it lasts a week or more. (edited: on my currently length this style takes about 30 minutes longer) 1) Start with dry or slightly damp detangled hair. I prefer […]
This natural hair style is basically two big flat twists and a bun. It is simple to do and usually lasts me about 3 days. For this style you will need large bobby pins, a pony tail holder, a brush and gel. I typically do this style on my natural hair that I have stretched […]
This bun is often called a sock bun, however I don’t use a sock or any stuffing. If your hair is thin you should consider using a satin covered scrunchie or natural textured weave to stuff the bun and give it a full look. 1) Start with hair that is slightly damp. 2) […]
This simple updo hair style takes me about 10 minutes. One thing I like about this style is that it can last 3-4 days if I tie it up at night and braid up the loose bang in the front. You can accessorize this style however you want. I used a comb with a ribbon […]
I wear this natural updo hair style quite frequently in the summer. It is super quick and it will usually last a week. I do this style on hair that has been stretched out by braiding or blowdrying. This style is great for natural hair growth because it requires little manipulation once it is done, […]
