Food for Hair Growth

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are key food for hair growth
because they contain various essential vitamins and minerals. I think it is impossible to list every fruit and vegetable that can aid with natural hair growth, however several stand out such as:

  • dark leafy green vegetables (vitamin C, iron)
  • carrots (vitamin A)
  • blueberries (vitamin B complex)

Sometimes it can be difficult to get all of the vitamins and minerals we need from food so you may want to consider taking a supplemental vitamins for hair growth.

Whole Grains

When choosing food for hair growth, select whole grains over refined processed carbohydrate products. The body uses whole grain products more efficiently and they contain zinc which helps with hair health. I get most of my whole grain servings from:

  • Oatmeal
  • Brown Rice
  • Whole grain pasta (not white)
  • Couscous

Now that you know what to eat you may be wondering if there are foods you should avoid. Some experts suggest avoiding excessive alcohol and large amounts of caffeine to improve chances of maximum hair growth. The link is not certain but you may want to have these things in moderation if you truly want the best hair growth possible.

What if I am Vegan or Vegetarian?

It is definitely possible to have long healthy hair on a vegan or vegetarian diet. I was vegetarian for several years. I noticed that my hair growth was slower when I did not maintain proper protein intake. Once I researched and learned about various plant based proteins I increased my intake and noticed improved hair growth. Most people need between 40-70 grams of protein depending on their age and activity level. I try to get at least 50 grams per day. Just as with any diet it is important to eat a variety of foods for hair growth if you are vegan or vegetarian. I also recommend taking vitamins to ensure you are getting enough iron and B complex.

In general eating a healthy balanced diet will help promote hair growth. The tips given here do not substitute for consultation with a nutritionist or physician. Please consult a professional regarding your individual needs and concerns.
